Plot

The megalomaniacal android Ultron, wanting revenge on the Avengers for his string of defeats, broke into a time capsule that contained the recorded history of humanity and planted within it a document detailing the defeat of the Avengers. Just as Ultron had planned, Kang the Conqueror read the document centuries later, and, confident that he would be the one to defeat the Avengers, travelled back to the present, and invited Ultron and other villains to join him. Together they dropped a nuclear bomb on the Avengers Mansion, killing the "New Avengers". This act brought the surviving members of the original Avengers back together, which is just what Ultron had planned.

Times had changed in the Marvel Universe. Nearly all of the supervillains had been executed by the government, who agreed to pay superheroes for turning them in, essentially getting the heroes to do their dirty work for them. Captain America, appalled at the government's actions, had run for President, hoping to turn things around. His presidency was a successful one, only for him to be assassinated into his third term.

The leadership duties of the group lay with Henry Pym, who severely doubted his leadership abilities, but nonetheless assembled as many heroes as he could to stop Kang and Ultron. When the time came to battle the villains, however, Pym lost his nerve and retreated to the sub-atomic dimension, leaving the others to combat the villains.

A spectacular battle ensued between the Avengers and their foes, and ultimately Pym did return to battle, although he was killed by Kang. His wife Janet then killed Kang in retaliation. When only Ultron remained on the villains' side, he grew to enormous size and seemed to have the upper hand. The day was saved by the arrival of the Vision, who earlier had refused to join the Avengers out of grief. The Vision destroyed Ultron, sacrificing his own life in the process.

After the battle, a memorial was held for all of the fallen heroes. The audience then learns that Captain America is not in fact dead, but is in hiding until his injuries can be healed. He has in fact been recording the events of the story on a series of sophisticated computer monitors. As the story ends, Cap tells the computer to save the file so that future generation can see the Avengers' final victory.

Henry Pym and Janet Pym;

In this universe, Hank and Janet eventually reconciled and remarried. Hank supported them both with his scientific work, although he was unable to halt the physiological breakdown of Janet's body - years of size-changing was now causing her to lose an inch in height every year. It was Hank and Janet who received the invitation from the villains for a final battle after the deaths of the New Avengers, and then took it upon themselves to recruit a new roster of Avengers. Doubting his abilities to lead the team, Hank lost his nerve just before the battle began, fleeing to the Microverse. Janet continued to battle alone with the Avengers, and when she was nearly killed by Oddball, Hank returned to save her. He was then cowardly shot in the back by Kang, and Janet furiously killed Kang in retaliation. Janet survived the final battle and attended the memorial service for her husband and the other fallen Avengers.
